Nicolaas Roosenboom studied painting under Andreas Schelfhout, and both were successful artists in the Dutch Romantic movement. Roosenboom specialized in winter landscapes, and this panel painting depicting a delightful winter scene with figures skating and sleighing is a beautiful example.

The varnish layer on this small panel painting had become discoloured and was covered by a dull layer of surface dirt. Otherwise, the painting was in excellent condition. After cleaning the surface and varnish, a new and more stable synthetic varnish layer was applied to saturate the paint layers and provide protection from dust and grime.

The painting was conservation framed to give stability and also accommodate any dimensional changes that might occur with environmental fluctuations in the panel support of the painting.
